Your critical guide to events, culture, attractions & going out in Sligo

Welcome to the June edition of Sligo Now. The weather hasn't been great up to now so here's hoping that there is a good spell on the horizon. We normally get a heatwave once the children start their exams. Speaking of exams I would like to wish anyone sitting theirs the best of luck and remember although they are an important milestone in your life it is not the end of the world if you do not perform to your capabilities. Life goes on and over the coming years you will have many opportunities to achieve your goals.
Sligo Native Anthony Gray, owner of multi award winning Sligo restaurants Tra Ban in Strandhill and Eala Bhan in Sligo town knows a thing or two about running a successful, top class restaurant. Anthony’s high standards haven’t gone unnoticed and he was thrilled to recently be elected as the new President of Restaurants Association Ireland. Zara McDaid met Anthony to discuss his new title as president of the Restaurants association Ireland, his hopes and dreams of placing Sligo on the map as a top culinary destination and also to find out his top tips for making it in the restaurant and food industry.
Just weeks before the Gallagher family fly to the USA for baby Rory to undergo a life-changing procedure that will allow him to walk against all odds, his mother Shauna tells Kate Winter the rollercoaster story so far.
Most, if not all artists living here in Sligo, work on their own from their home studio. A lot of us are unaware of all the fabulous work being created, the length and breadth of the county. Local artist, Oonagh B.McCann, from CeltoiCroi Studio, Ballygawley, opens the lid on Sligos Creative Collective, to bring to the forefront, the artistic beauty and creativity to be found on our doorstep, inspiring minds that are there for the taking, when one is lucky enough to be shown. Here she speaks to Elaine Cummins from Marshall Made It.
Leonie Cornelius explores the stunning Bloom 2015 Showgarden by local plantswoman Lorely Forrester. This year the North West of Ireland was once again represented at National level at Bloom in the Park which took place over the June Bank holiday Weekend. Brian Finnegan is an acclaimed novelist, with his third book out soon and plenty of accolades under his belt. He is the editor of GCN Magazine and has been a distinguished contributor to many Irish publications over the years. Here, he speaks frankly to Kate Winter, about a difficult childhood, challenges and triumphs over the years and his passion for storytelling.
This month there is definitely something for everyone inside. Till next month...
